Forest Buchanan, 96, of Amsterdam, died Monday morning, April 15, 2002, in Trinity West Medical Center at Steubenville after an extended illness. He was born June 2, 1905, in Carroll County, son of the late Homer G. and Blanche Elizabeth (Kirby) Buchanan. Forest was a member of the Hope Church, National Retired Teachers Assoc., Safari International Club, Pittsburgh Chapter, Teralta Nature Club in West Virginia, and he founded the Forest Audubon Nature Club. He was a graduate of Mount Union College and Cornell University. Forest was a renowned educator and naturalist, photographer, writer, omithologist and sportsman. He taught for 26 years in Amsterdam High school beginning in 1928. He was also a principal and a guidance counselor retiring in 1972 from Springfield Local School. Forest traveled extensively throughout Africa, South America including the Amazon, and the Caribbean Islands on safari and educational trips. A nature trail in San Juan Puerto Rico was named after him. He was inducted into the Ohio Natural Resource Hall of Fame. He was honored with a bronze plaque for his work in preserving the Stillfork Swamp Nature Preserve in Carroll County. In 1996, on his 90th birthday, he was honored by the village of Amsterdam for his lifetime achievements. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Mary Blanche) Bright of Amsterdam; six grandchildren, Heather, Autumn, April, Holly, Ray and Charles; four great-grandchildren, Jade, Sage, Damon and Zayne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice; and a son, Barry; four brothers are also deceased. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Hope Church at Amsterdam with Thomas Chain and Pastor David Guess officiating. Burial will be in the Kilgore Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home at Amsterdam and one hour prior to the service's at the church.
