Thomas B. 06October1923 D. 25June2003 Last Residence: 63432 Arbela, Scotland County, Missouri Socail Security Card Issued In The State Of Iowa ____________________ Glynn Booth Thomas, Jr., (G.B.), 79, of Arbela passed away Wednesday evening, June 25, 2003, at his home. He was born the son of Glynn Booth Thomas Sr. and Nellie Elgene (Morris) Thomas on October 6, 1923 in Gorin. G.B. graduated from the Gorin High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army during World War II as an ambulance driver at Camp Roberts, CA, from 1943-1946. For his service, G.B. earned the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. On July 1, 1945, he married Rovene Irene Roberts at the Methodist Church in Kahoka. G.B. had a combined total of 38 years of service in the United States Post Office, including substitute mail carrier and a rural mail carrier. In the mid 1960's, G.B. began trenching, which led to the construction of the Farmer's Tavern, which is still known for its lakes and campground near Gorin. For many years, he operated the tavern and camp-ground, and became renowned for his Sunday auctions and fish fries. Throughout his life, G.B. enjoyed farming, fishing, cutting wood and just being outdoors, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, "Mommy" Rovene. G.B. was most known for his visiting friends and telling "big stories", passing out peppermints everywhere he went and for the nicknames he gave his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Tobe, Johnny, and Mike; and a daughter, Shirley Thomas Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Rovene, of Arbela; two sons: Rodney and his wife Debbie of Gorin, and Randy and his fiancé, Cathy Brown, of Memphis; a son in-law, Bob Anderson of Knox City; two brothers: Jim Thomas of Gorin and Gary and his wife Sharon Thomas of Libertyville, IL; a sister, Lois Branch and her husband Jim of Sterling, IL; a sister-in-law, Lela Thomas of Earlville, IA; five grandchildren: Dale "Hounddog" Thomas and wife Pam of Memphis, Gayle "Sis" Thomas and Tim "Toad" Thomas, both of Ottumwa, Miranda "Pumpkin Head" Thomas of Moberly, and Sandra "Sam" Thomas Swearingen and her husband Craig of Memphis; four great-grandsons: Brett, Bradley, Bo, and Benner Thomas of Memphis; one great-granddaughter, Kalissa Thomas of Memphis; one step great-grandson, Landyn Swearingen of Memphis; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the Gorin United Methodist Church with Pastors Mark Boley and Ilene Howell officiating. Burial was in the Gorin Cemetery. Music was provided by Teresa Sears, pianist. Serving as casket bearers were Dale Thomas, Tim Thomas, Craig Swearingen, Tim Branch, Randy Mathes, and Bill Wiley. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Kenny Dieterich, Bruce Tague, Weldon Tague, Jerry Sears, Dwight DeRosear, and Gary Dial. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Fund and can be left at or mailed to Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main St., Memphis, MO 63555 Gerth Funeral Service handled the arrangements from their Memphis chapel. -------------------------
