Read More	This was in The Republican Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, October 27, 1899. John Smith is a native of Loudon Township where he still resides. He was born and raised and worked on a farm until the age of 28 when he moved to Kilgore and engaged in the hotel business. For a number of years he followed a thresher and had the reputation of being one of the hardest working men in the company. While thus engaged he traveled extensively over the county and made hosts of friends among the farmers. He was assessor of Loudon Township and the returns made to the auditor show that he thoroughly understood his work. He has served as supervisor of his native township from a time to which the memory of man runneth not to the contrary: Mr. Smith is a genial, whole-souled fellow. The competent manner in which he provided for the wants of the multitude that flocked to the republican convention which made Kilgore famous and secured for it a prominent place on the map of Ohio stamped him as a natural born landlord. Mr. Smith is now filling the position of commissioner by appointment and is also a candidate for the unexpired term. He has fully grasped the situation and has shown peculiar fitness for his office. Being endowed with good judgment, understanding the wants of the county and with an honesty of purpose that no one can question, the affairs of the commissioners' office can be placed in no better hands. (NOTE--there is a photo of him in the original article.) In the 1900 census John was living in Loudon Township, Carroll County, Ohio. He was listed as age 52 born January 1848 in Ohio, his wife Emma J. age 49 born May 1851 in Ohio. Their daughter Carrie B. age 21 was also living with them. The census listed John's parents birth states as Virginia, and Emma's as Ohio. It also state they had 5 children but only 4 still living. His obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, June 8, 1917. John Smith, former commissioner of Carroll County, died Sunday in Salem where he had removed from Kilgore about five years ago. Death resulted from heart disease. The body was brought to Kilgore for burial. Funeral was held Tuesday, services being conducted by the Rev. Messrs. Wooley of Harlem Springs, Myer of Salem and Kinsley of Youngstown. Mr. Smith was born in Loudon Township about 69 years ago. He worked on the farm until the year 1874 when he came to the little village of Kilgore where he conducted the hotel there for many years. He was popular and affable as a landlord and his hostelry gained a wide reputation the country around. He married Mrs. Emma J. Stenger, who preceded him in death a number of years ago. Upon the death of County Commissioner John Clark of Leesville, Mr. Smith was appointed county commissioner, December 3, 1898. He was elected for the two succeeding terms thereafter, filling the office acceptably. Mr. Smith is survived by three daughters and one son; Mary, wife of John Fawcett of Loudon twp.; Mrs. Maud Wrikeman of Loudon Twp.; Mrs. Carrie Phillips of Youngstown, and Charles Smith. Two brothers and one sister also survive; Jacob Smith near Cleveland; Rev. George Smith of Bellaire and Mrs. Isaiah Salmon of Loudon Twp.
