Zimmerman, a retired teacher who taught in the Archbold area for 56 years, died of stomach cancer Friday in her home. She was 92. Ms. Zimmerman, who survived cancer twice in the past 10 years, was admitted to Hospice, The Caring Way, of Williams and Fulton Counties in late January. Ms. Zimmerman, who lived in Archbold her entire life, was a strict but compassionate educator, said her son Roger, who was his mother's student when he was in third grade. Darlene Polasek, a retired Archbold Elementary teacher, was both a student and a colleague of Ms. Zimmerman, who she said was the reason she became a teacher. "She loved every kid. She was just so fair, she inspired me," she said. "She was very dedicated to her profession; she treated each student as a special person." Ms. Zimmerman was born in Archbold to Katherine and Charles Winzeler, when her family's mode of transportation consisted of a horse and buggy. She was raised on a farm where her love for gardening flowers and vegetables was fostered. Ms. Zimmerman graduated from Archbold High School in 1930 and decided to become a teacher, studying at Bowling Green Normal College, now Bowling Green State University. She started teaching in 1933, and her early career was spent in various one-room schoolhouses in German Township in southwest Fulton County. She taught children of many ages at once, ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade. On Christmas Day in 1941, Ms. Zimmerman married Roscoe Zimmerman, who died in 1995. Their wedding was secret because teachers at the time were expected to remain single. Mr. Zimmerman rejoined the Army in 1942 and served overseas; Ms. Zimmerman often traveled to military bases across the country to meet her husband when he was on leave. Ms. Zimmerman spent most of her career teaching third grade at Archbold Elementary, a job she held for 33 years. Her son said that she put special emphasis on the correct use of the English language. "I thought she was very precise, very disciplined," he said. "She was fair, kind, and understanding but strict." Ms. Zimmerman loved Archbold and stayed there her entire life partially because of her students, who often grew up to become her friends. Her son said that she was frequently approached by former pupils when she left the house. One man thanked her for helping him adapt to the community when he was a child new to Archbold. After Ms. Zimmerman retired, she was a substitute teacher for 16 years. When Sauder Village was founded by Ms. Zimmerman's friend, the late Erie Sauder, she began to volunteer there. She quilted and taught in the one-room schoolhouse for historical demonstrations. Ms. Zimmerman was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Archbold, where she once taught Sunday School. She was active with the St. Martin's Lutheran Women organization, with which she worked for various charitable causes, such as making baby quilts. She often participated in church functions with her sister and frequent companion, Doris Meyer. Survivors include her sister Doris Meyer and her son Roger. A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Archbold. Arrangements were by the Grisier Funeral
