Morris met his wife Elizabeth Marshall while she was living in Fort Mackinack, Mackinac Island, Michigan with her parents William David and Fanny Ann Hawkins Marshall. They married there April 22, 1852. He was 29 and she was 15. He was in the military for over 10 years. They were the parents of 10 known children. I believe this is actually Morris de LayFayette Jr. listed below. He probably did not know his correct date of birth. His sisters did not know their dates of birth and had to write letters to the state to find out. Morris de Layfayette Dowane Jr. I wondered why Amy Dowane Harding was buried in the Wheatland Cemetery with her parents and siblings and not in the Harding Plot in Peoria Cemetery. An old map shows that this plot was called the Harding Plot. Richard Harding must have purchased it when Amy died and then turned it over for the use of the Dowane family after he remarried. OBITUARY DOWANE, MORRIS DEL. Daily Appeal - 12/13/1910, p4 - Certainly Had A War Record - M. D. Dowane, a Mexican war veteran, died yesterday at his home in Wheatland. He was a native of Wayne county, Ohio, 82 years of age. He leaves three sons, William, Fred and Morris and three daughters, Mrs. William Bradshaw, Mrs. Hattie Hackett and Lizzie Dowane. The funeral will be conducted on Wednesday from his late home at 2 p.m. The same will be in charge of Undertaker Bevan. - The deceased was an old time friend of R. E. Bevan and wrote him as follows under date of August 7, 1910. - "I want to give you a little of my war record. I was in the Mexican war for three years. From there I went to Fort McKenzie, Michigan, was there three years and my regiment was sent to Washington Territory, and was there three years fighting Indians. Left there when my time was out after serving ten years. I am now receiving the magnificent sum of twenty dollars per month. I want you to show this to the Appeal and let them publish it. My father and one of my grandfathers fought in the revolutionary war. My father went as a drummer boy at fourteen and at fifteen they gave him a musket. This gun which my father used in the Revolution I left in Ohio when I went to the Mexican war. My father was sixteen when he was discharged in 1783." His foot stone reflects the year that he died as 1911-which is incorrect. There are many errors on the Dowane Family stones leading me to believe that the stone carver had issues or that they were placed at a later date by family members. I have tried to locate records for the headstones and foot stones and who may have placed them..but have not been successful. Please don't hesitate to contact me with additional information or questions. I would love to find Morris's father and Grandfather and their histories.
