Active in American Legion as District 9 Commander and then on National Executive Committee. (a.k.a. "Bill") -------- He attended Holstein schools and at he age of 17 attended the Chicago American School of Drying & Cleaning. He graduated in 1911 and came back to Ida County to work for his brother-in-law, Homer Keith, at Keith's Laundry and Cleaning Co. About 1938, he he quit his job at Keith's to establish his own dry cleaning then across Main Street from the Pioneer Record. Ten years later, he bought Keith's Laundry and moved Suiter's Cleaners to Second Street in about 1950. The dry cleaning business closed in about 1978. Bill had logged 60 years in the laundry-dry cleanaing and tayloring business. On June 23, 1921, at Ida Grove, he married Ada Douglas Cameron, and they had 2 daughters, Elizabeth Anne and Janet Marilyn. He was the Centennial King for Ida Grove in 1978, along with Centennial Queen, Margaret Ford. He served on the Ida Grove school board for 10 years, and served in Co. 1, 326 infantry, 82nd Div in WW I with duty in France. He was a 1st Lt. for 4 years in the Iowa State Guard and an honorary Colonel on the Governor Erbe's staff. He was a post commander in 1924 and 1942, as a county commander in 1929 & 1938, District 9 Vice Commander in 1930, and Department Vice Commander in1940. He was manager of the Chamber of Commerce for 8 years, and a member of the Ida Grove Fire Dept. for 30 years, serving as Fire Chief for 3 years. At one point, he won a gold medal for being first in the state of Iowa for the fastest coupling of fire hoses. He was a juvenile probation officer for the 16th Judicial District for 11 years. He was a member of the Siouxland Symphony Board and spearheaded Ida Grove Band Days in earlier years. He served as Master of Ceremonies for many affairs about the state, including the Scottish Festival, beef banquets, Band Days, and used to travel in northwest Iowa in the 1940s delivering Memorial Day addresses. He taught Sunday School class for many years. He belonged to other groups in Ida Grove, also.
