Description	:	Many of the burials in this cemetery were moved to the Wesleyan Cemetery when it opened in 1843 and the last burial was moved to Spring Grove Cemetery on May 11, 1972. No record has been found indicating Gurdon F. Saltonstall's remains were removed to either cemetery, so one can only conclude his remains are still in what was the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, now the plaza area on the south side of the Procter & Gamble headquarters building in Cincinnati. Crawford Q. Bullock, a great-grandson, writing in 1908 of Gurdon Flower Saltonstall, stated, "He died in Cincinnati, Ohio and was laid to rest at the Wesley Chapel." Although some have claimed he was buried at the Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio, there are no records that place him in that town. His obituary, published in his hometown newspaper, the Connecticut Gazette, on Wednesday, February 24, 1836 (New London, CT, Vol: LXXIII, Issue: 3772, page 3, column 2) states: "On the 30th January, at the city Hotel, in Cincinnati Ohio, after a protracted illness, Mr. Gurdon Saltonstall, in the 76th year of his age, formerly of this city." Gurdon Flower Saltonstal was born in New London, Connecticut on May 18, 1760 the eldest son of Captain Nathaniel Saltonstall (1727-1807) and his first wife, Rebecca (Flower) Saltonstall. He was named Gurdon (not Gordon), in honor of Gurdon Saltonstall, a Governor of the colony of Connecticut, and Flower was in honor of his mother's maiden surname. He served in the Revolutionary War, serving under his father, Captain Nathaniel Saltonstall, and would later apply for a Revolutionary War pension which was denied because he had served for less than six months. He was married to Hannah Hempstead, with whom he had two children, Gurdon F., Jr. and Hannah. Gurdon F. Saltonstall left Connecticut and settled in the city of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina prior to the enumeration of the 1790 census. He was a wheelwright, riding chairmaker, and an inventor who received a number of patents for various inventions, including four patents that were granted for cotton cleaners and gins between 1801 and 1803. One of his more interesting inventions was one for "rendering the common air more salubrious for respiration." He wrote a letter to President Thomas Jefferson regarding his invention, dated May 25, 1804. "Respected Sir— With Profound Respect to your high Official Capacity as a Statesman and Philosopher, I submit tho' with the greatest diffidence in my Own Judgment the enclosed plan of my Improved Air Pipes and bellows for supplying families with Pirfumed and Salubrious Air for Respiration—Perhaps it might be of service in large Cities and even in private families. If you think so and it is aproved by You, Meeting with your Patronage and Signature, I will truly esteem it as the highest Encomium that Can be Confer'd, and at the same time Consider myself under a lasting Obligation to you. I am Sir with True Respect Your Humbl. Servt. G. F: Saltonstall Please cause to be handed the enclosed plan of my improved air pipes to Samuel H. Smith—" An article entitled "Connecticut Influence on North Carolina Stoneware: The Webster School of Potters," published in the Journal of Early Southern Decorative Arts, published by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (volume 10, number 1; 1984), page 16, states, "During the early decades of the nineteenth century, Fayetteville developed strong ties with the lower Connecticut River Valley." It goes on to say, "Riding chairmaker Gurdon Saltonstall emigrated from…New London." Saltonstall's daughter, Susan Jane Saltonstall, would marry Edward Webster, formerly of New London, in Fayetteville on July 6, 1820. Webster was the artisan who served as the principal potter for the firm of Gurdon Robins & Company and was a focus of the aforementioned article. Gurdon F. Saltonstall was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as a steward and trustee of the Hay Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina (See Lamb, Elizabeth. Historical Sketch of Hay St. Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Fayetteville, North Carolina, pages 8-12 and 18). The Reverend William Capers wrote about the Hay Street Church and the town of Fayettevile, circa 1810, and stated, "In this pleasant town, with such people as the Blakes, Coburn, Lumsden, Saltonstall, McDonald, Thomas, Eccles, Price, and others, I was most agreeably situated." (Lamb, op cit., page 11) Gurdon F. Saltonstall remained in Fayetteville and is enumerated residing there in subsequent census enumerations. He appears to have left Fayetteville in the years following the 1820 census enumeration. He was residing in the Darlington District of South Carolina in the 1830 census enumeration, incorrectly recorded as "Geo. F. Saltonstall." A letter written by Gurdon F. Saltonstall, dated May 7, 1832, addressed by Saltonstall as residing at Society Hill, is indicative of his residence in what was then the Darlington District, now Darlington County, South Carolina. The letter was sent to his daughter, Rebecca Wright, who resided at Marian, South Carolina. A transcript of the letter is attached to the memorial of his grandson and namesake, Dr. Gurdon Flower Saltonstall Wright. Gurdon Flower Saltonstall's great-great-granddaughter, Marguerite (Croft) Thieker (1899-1990), transcribed family Bible records, family letters, and other family documents and these transcripts and original documents were handed down to her granddaughter, including the aforementioned 1832 letter. Although Gurdon Flower Saltonstall is commonly attributed as being in Cincinnati, Ohio at the time of his death in order to "visit family," this seems unlikely, as his father and younger half-siblings had settled in Marietta, Ohio, some two hundred miles away. His residence in Cincinnati likely related to land he purchased in Kentucky and Cincinnati's proximity to that state and the Licking and Ohio Rivers. He had received a patent for an improvement in inland navigation that was intended to "preserve the lives and property" of steamboat passengers. We may infer Saltonstall attended the Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church in Cincinnati during his residence in that city, although it appears he did not formally join the church. The church structure he would have attended was built in 1831 and was the largest meeting place west of the Alleghenies and the largest building in Cincinnati for many years. Wesley Chapel was the seat of Methodism in Cincinnati.
