Description	:	Harley Dry passed from this earthly life, at his home in Chester, on May 10, 1966. He was the last of seven children of Daniel Dry and Rebecca (sic) Mull Dry. He was the last of seven children of Daniel Dry and Rebecca (sic) Mull Dry. Born October 28, 1869 at Allendale, Worth County, Missouri, his age at death was 96 years, 6 months and 12 days. As a boy, Harley Dry attended schools in the rural communities near Allendale, Mo., and later at the Cracker Box School west of Chester. He came to this community with his parents on March 8, 1884. Fourteen years old at the time of his arrival, this community has been his home all the intervening years. On December 23, 1891, he was married to Mary Krause of Byron, Nebr. They lived and farmed for the first 15 years of their married life on two different farms west of Chester, and in 1905 moved to a farm one mile east of Chester. At Christmas time in 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Dry celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the Chester Christian Church. Mrs. Dry died in 1961, while plans were being made to observe their 70th wedding anniversary three months later. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Dry moved into Chester, and he has lived here for the past 56 years. During these years he has continued his interest in farming and has engaged in various other activities. He was in the grocery business for a number of years with his younger brother, William Dry. He was among the first, and probably the first, to engage in the automobile sales business in Chester. In this, his partner was Dr. H.H. Stretton. Harley Dry was precinct assessor for 28 years. He was agent for the Etna & Springfield Insurance Co. for 25 years. He retired from this work at the age of 84. He drove a school bus for the Chester schools for 21 years, and was janitor of the Christian Church for many years, while engaged in his other activities. Mr. Dry was a member of the Chester Christian Church. He united with this church in 1904, and has maintained his interest and activity in this church since that time. He has been a member of the Church Board of Elders and Deacons most of these years. The position which he remembered most gratefully was that of being treasurer of the building committee which guided this church to successful financing and completing of his building in 1908. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Chester, joining October 11, 1902, and continuing his membership for 64 years. He was one of the oldest members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. He served many years on the Village Town Board, and on the School Board of District 31. Harley Dry was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his son, Rev. Lawrence Dry of Mitchell, and his daughter, Mrs. Lottie Cummins of Lincoln. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown of Western Springs, a suburb of Chicago, and Mrs. Barbara Snider of Tucson, Ariz., and by four great grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Maurice Graham of Belleville at the Chester Christian Church Friday afternoon, May 13. Mrs. John E. Crouse and Mrs. Wilbert Crouse sang, accompanied by Mrs. Ray Truss. Pallbearers were Ray Truss, Walter Thomas, John Sell, Hugh Spafford, Paul Dry and Clarence Palmer. Honorary bearers were Ben Adams, John Adams, Frank Larkins, J.E. Woodward, W.C. Rhea and John S. Crouse. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery, Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Service in charge.
