He was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Polk County, the son of Oswald and Aurelia Alt Bernt Sr., and attended Polk County schools. Mr. Bernt was married to Barara [sic] Mimick April 12, 1948, at St. Anthony Church. He was associated in the General Construction Company. A veteran of World War II, he served from Oct. 24, 1941, to Oct. 24, 1945. He was a member of Post No. 3704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Bernt, a Catholic, was a member of St. Bonaventure Church. He is survived by his wife; sons, Eward [sic] of Ft. Lewis, Wash., Timothy and Joseph at home; daughters, Janet and Susan, at home; his father, of Osceola; brothers, Leo and Sylvester Bernt of Columbus; and a sister, Mrs. Monte (Veronica) Davis of Omaha. Mr. Bernt was preceded in death by a son, Thomas, in childhood; two daughters, Mary Alice, in infancy; and his mother. ----------------------- The Columbus Telegram, May 7, 1970 BERNT--Bernt Rites - Funeral services for Oswald E. Bernt Jr., 52, were held Wednesday at St. Bonaventure Church. The Rev. Cal Giesen and Rev. Emmett Meyer concelebrated the Mass, and burial was in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were: Francis and Mark Alt, Raymond and Eugene A. Bernt, Floyd H. Arasmith Sr. and Arthur Gabriel. Military graveside services were conducted by the Honor Guard of Hartman Post 84, American Legion, with Keith Bryan as sergeant. Members of the color guard were L.M. Johnson and Paul Pfeifer. Serving as the escort were: William D. Putnam, Gene Neater Paul Gutzmer, Duane Ernst, Walter Kopetzky and Jim Gregorius. Paul Abegglen and Paul Braun presented the flag. Steve Herfkens was the bugler. School children from Scotus attended in a group. Mr. Bernt is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Mimick, and five children, Edward of Fort Lewis, Wash., Timothy, Joseph, Janet and Susan, all at home. A son, Thomas, died in childhood, and two daughters, Mary Louise and Mary Alice, died in infancy.
